The Wizard's Day Off is a fun spoof on fantasy novels. Spoofing fantasy novels becomes a fantasy in itself, and I liked this twist. The humorous drama comes complete with cast of odd characters, a land of enchantment and even a quest. Every fantasy has to have a quest, regardless of how odd it might turn out to be. Wendell, the Wizard, has been lured into a "vacation," which is fine with him, since he appears not to know he has been charmed. Unfortunately, in the land of Cargite, the gem "Ahem" (Wendell's responsibility and the actual source of all magic in Cargite) is becoming progressively dimmer, and the result of this is a slow erosion of the good feelings characteristic of Cargite. Prince Tumumbly and his sister, Princess Cara, assign themselves to find Wendell and restore the gem to its prior brilliance. Unfortunately, Twab, a sinister character, and his associates want to take over Cargite and assemble an army there. This army will be tasked with taking two adjoining kingdoms from their hapless peoples. Tumumbly and Cara assemble a group of questors, including the Scribe of the Land, Pennettio Potts, the individual responsible for the text of this book. The story unfolds from his point of view, which is a bit off-kilter. Enjoy the adventure and the humor of it all.
